A word of advice.

Cold outreach mistakes that 99% of service providers make:

Last week, I got a WhatsApp from an unknown number.

A financial advisor who found my contact details on a startup community group.

Her message:

I have a soft spot for advisors (most of my close friends work in the industry), so instead of just ignoring what I consider a painfully generic cold message, I offered a word of advice.

My response:

Cool! So first off:

I’ve never heard of you before. So if you send me a picture with your company content and a list of 5 services, you’re leaving me with a lot of thinking to do. It’s a big commitment.

And most cold audience don’t need to give you the time of day let alone do a lot of extra thinking.

I normally tell advisors to pick one “trip wire” offer they’re most confident in when they do outreach.

Make an offer they can’t refuse, but also one that requires the least thinking power.

Maybe something like:

“Hey Jacques! Saw you on the startup group, so I’m confident this will interest you.

Not sure if you’re paying more than R1,500 for short term insurance at the moment, but if you are, I’ve managed to help 6 other Startup members save at least R450pm on a revised plan in the last month.

Most of them use that savings to upgrade their AI business software but you could see at as an extra date night if you wanted 😁

Can I do a free comparison for you with Momentum?

All I would need from you is your current schedule PDF (WhatsApp is fine).

You’ll have a revised option from me within 3 days. No strings attached.

BTW, I’m still relatively new in the industry, so even if nothing changes in your schedule, I’d appreciate the experience."

She then sends me the WhatsApp you saw at the start of this email.

Here's how to write outreach messages like a copywriter:

(Use these bullets to improve your response rates)

  • Make it about them. Not you.
  • Show them an outcome.
  • Make it easy. (one offer, not 5)
  • Show specifics and proof.
  • Tell them what to do, and what they get.

And most importantly...

  • Make it worth their time.

Prospects don't care about you.

You must make them.
